The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Cross River State Chapter, wishes to express its deep concern over what it describes as the continued decline in the quality of healthcare services and the deteriorating condition of public health facilities across Cross River State.
Following consultations with its member political parties and reports received from communities across the state, the CNPP states that it has passed a vote of no confidence on the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk, citing what it considers inadequate leadership of the health sector and the perceived failure to address persistent challenges affecting government-owned health institutions.
The CNPP alleges that many public health facilities continue to face shortages of essential medicines, inadequate medical equipment, poor infrastructure, and insufficient healthcare personnel. According to the organization, these challenges have negatively affected access to quality healthcare for many residents.
The conference therefore calls on Governor Bassey Edet Otu to undertake an urgent review of the performance of the health sector and, if he deems it appropriate, relieve the Commissioner for Health of his appointment as part of a broader cabinet reshuffle aimed at improving governance and service delivery.
The CNPP further urges the state government to prioritize:
*Rehabilitation and equipping of public hospitals and primary healthcare centres.
*Recruitment and welfare of qualified healthcare professionals.
*Regular supply of essential drugs and medical consumables.
*Transparent management of healthcare resources.
Effective implementation of policies that improve healthcare access, especially in rural communities.
The organization maintains that government appointments should be guided by performance, accountability, and the public interest. It adds that periodic cabinet evaluations are important to ensure that government officials meet the expectations of the people.
The CNPP concludes by reaffirming its commitment to constructive opposition and democratic accountability, stating that its position is intended to encourage improved governance and better healthcare outcomes for the people of Cross River State.
