Terrorism Trial: Court to Deliver Judgment on Nnamdi Kanu’s Case November 20 After He Waives Right to Defence

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed November 20 for the delivery of judgment in the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Presiding Judge, Justice James Omotosho, announced the date on Friday following Kanu’s decision not to open his defence within the six days allotted to him by the court.

Justice Omotosho held that the defendant had been given adequate time and opportunity to present his case but failed to take advantage of it. He further stated that having voluntarily waived his right to defence, Kanu could not subsequently claim to have been denied a fair hearing.

“The defendant, having been granted sufficient opportunity to conduct his defence and choosing not to do so, cannot validly assert a breach of his constitutionally guaranteed right to fair hearing,” the judge ruled.

The forthcoming judgment is expected to mark a crucial phase in the high-profile case, which has attracted both national and international attention since Kanu’s re-arrest and continued detention.
